Livingston Shield

The Livingston Shield was a project of Livingston Robotics Club (LRC) teams to create or modify face shield designs as part of our COVID-19 Projects from March to May 2020. Team members (grades 7-10) came up with an optimized face shield design called #LivingstonShield. We made thousands of these face shields and sent to many healthcare facilities in New Jersey and across the nation. By the end of our initiative on June 14, we delivered 4,010 face shields across the nation.

IC3D Budmen – Livingston Mod Face Shield (the “Livingston Shield”)
This face shield was originally designed by Budmen Industries with their V.4 called IC3D Budmen Face Shield. Team members (grades 7-10) of Livingston Robotics Club, Spongebot (Robocup Jr. and FLL Innovation Ambassador), Thingamabot (FLL) and Flame Machines (FLL), collaborated in a rapid development cycle daily after school to make modifications to improve airflow, cut printing time, and change the strap holes to hooks to eliminate strap lock and to allow wider applications of elastic attachment. See in-depth history of the project in this West Essex Tribune article. The final product is called “IC3D Budmen – Livingston Mod Face Shield” with the nickname “Livingston Shield”. The teams also developed the “Livingston Seamless Top Shield” using a sheet rather than 3D printing. - Livingston Shield V1.1: Reduced the thickness of the strap hooks and the visor structure (March 31. 2020)
- Livingston Shield V1.2: Changed style of strap hooks (March 31, 2020)
- Livingston Shield V2.0: Reduced the frame structure size. Changed hooks to loops with a slit (April 3, 2020)
- Livingston Shield V2.1: Rounded corners (April 13, 2020)
- Livingston Shield V2.2: Reduced the frame structure size (April 21, 2020)
In a comparison using the same slicer setting, a single shield printing has the following time & material usages:

With the above design, Promethio (a former member of the club), Exit 5A Robotics, Exit 6 Robotics, and other friends in the neighborhoods helped print them so we could have a constant output into our assembly line and ship them out every day.
Livingston Seamless Top Shield
This is an offshoot of the Livingston Shield to apply the same principle to other top-open face shield designs (an example on the right is a Prusa face shield) by using a single sheet without a cut or overlapping sheet. Pepsi Shield
LRC cofounder, John, made a quick prototype of face shield from a two-liter Pepsi bottle on March 28. He released the V.1.1 on April 3, 2020. Here is the instruction on how to make one.
