4,010 Face Shields and 6,379 Ear Savers

Project Overview

In accordance with our mission statement, LRC supports projects that encourage children and teens to use science and engineering knowledge to help solve real-world problems. With the COVID-19 crisis in our area in March 2020, we activated the following projects (see terms and conditions):

Livingston Shield

Livingston Shield

Livingston Shield

The Livingston Shield project started on March 27, 2020, current and former LRC teams were working to use 3D printing process and other techniques to produce reusable face shields for frontline healthcare workers and first responders who desperately need the protection. LRC teams (grades 7-10) collaborated in redesigning of a popular face shield to improve airflow and printing speed. It was known as the “Livingston Shield“. We had been printing the Livingston Shield design since April 3, 2020 until the end of the project on June 14, 2020. See the Livingston Shield project page for details.

By the end of our project on June 14, 2020, we made and donated 4,010 reusable face shields. The recipients included many departments (outpatient, cancer center, infusion center, inpatient oncology, radiation oncology, hospitalist program, radiology, labor and delivery, X-Ray, surgical, burn ICU, PACU, CTICU, CCU, ICU, ER, pediatric ER and EMT) in 16 hospitals:

See some photos of the ear savers here.

Ray Kholodovsky, a Livingston resident and former member of Lancer Robotics FTC team (Livingston High School team, not an affiliated of LRC) joined the effort to print thousands of ear savers. By the end of our project on June 14, 2020, we made and donated 6,379 ear savers to:
